UCLAWC Hosts First Annual Staff Retreat
UCLAWC held its first, what is looking to be annual, staff retreat January 28 at Westminster College. Approximately 50 tutors, staff and directors from area writing centers and the Westminster ESL Institute attended the retreat.
Each group shared aspects of what makes them distinct: the SLCC Community Writing Center detailed its many efforts to build community inside and outside the CWC. SLCC Student Writing Center consultants shared their creative and witty comic strips on daily life in the writing center. The Westminster College Writing Center raised awareness about the role of gender in interactions between writers and consultants and showed this sassy video satirizing how male writers may perceive an all-female staff (included below). The Westminster ESL Institute raised awareness about appropriate strategies for working with non-native speakers, and the University of Utah Writing Center illustrated their unique nature by detailing the many kinds of writers they serve.
